Ficus hedges in Broward went from “privacy wall” to “stick fence” in a few bad whitefly years, and a lot of those hedges never filled back in. KAP Tree Service still does hedge trimming in Davie, but we will not sell you a monthly shape-up on a hedge that is already dead wood.

What whitefly looks like on ficus
The underside of the leaf gets a pale, dusty look. Leaves yellow, drop, and the hedge goes see-through. Sooty mold grows on the honeydew. You will see ants farming the insects. The stems stay green for a while after the leaves are gone, which is why people keep watering a skeleton.
We are not a spray company, and this page is not a pesticide recipe. University and IFAS pages cover chemical options. What we do is tell you whether there is enough live wood to cut back to, or whether you are paying to trim sticks.
What trimming can and cannot do
If the hedge still has green on the inner wood, a hard cut-back can push new growth. It will look worse before it looks better. If the wood is dry and snaps, no amount of shaping will rebuild a screen. At that point you are choosing: pull it and plant something else, or live with gaps.
Do not keep a tall, hollow ficus hedge next to a pool cage “for privacy” if it is one storm from coming over the screen. That is a removal conversation, same as a tree. Neighborhoods in Sunrise still have original ficus walls from the 90s; some of them are fine, some of them are props.
Replacing the hedge
If it comes out, grind or dig the stumps so you are not fighting suckers. Pick a plant that matches the HOA and the space: clusia, podocarpus, cocoplum, or a fence. We will cut and haul the ficus. Planting a 200-foot replacement hedge is a landscape job; say so if you need both.
Privacy hedges that are still healthy need a cycle, not a whitefly miracle. Our older post on privacy hedge advantages is about living hedges, not ghosts.
What not to do
Do not paint the cuts. Do not “fertilize it back to life” with a heavy nitrogen dump on a leafless hedge. Do not let a crew top the neighboring oak to “let light in” as a whitefly cure. Light is not the bug.
If the hedge is on a property line, figure out who owns it before anyone cuts the neighbor’s side to the stubs. That fight is older than whitefly.
Living with a recovering hedge
If we cut a ficus back and it still has green, you will water it through the next dry stretch and you will not shear it every two weeks while it is trying to leaf. Let the interior push. Then go back to a cycle. A hedge that is half live and half sticks looks worse if you keep boxing the dead side as if it were still a wall.
Neighbors will ask you to “match” their side. If their side is dead, matching means both of you replace, not both of you pretend. Property-line hedges are two owners. Get that straight before the saw.
Whitefly is not a reason to take down a healthy oak in the same yard. Keep the jobs separate. Spray decisions belong to you and a licensed pest operator. Our job is wood: what to cut, what to pull, what to plant later.
If you replace the hedge, run the irrigation before you plant the new line. A dry strip of fill is why the last hedge struggled even before whitefly. Leave space off the fence so we can trim without taking the neighbor’s siding. Clusia and podocarpus do not want to be sheared as hard as ficus was. Ask the nursery about mature width, then believe them.
We can pull a dead ficus wall in sections so the street stays open. That is a removal day, not a hedge day. Price it that way.
If you want us on the property, have the gate code, the HOA rule if there is one, and a clear photo of the whole tree or hedge from the side that faces the house. That is enough to start. We will tell you if we need to walk it before we price. No dollar figures on this page, no 24-hour promise we cannot keep, and no topping.
Davie is the yard we work from. Nearby cities are on the same trucks, not a different company. If the job is on the other side of the county line, say the city when you call so we bring the right permit conversation, not the Davie one.
