The right shade tree in a Davie yard is one that fits the lot, the wires, and the Town’s patience, not whatever was on sale at the big-box store. KAP Tree Service is asked about tree planting in Davie after removals, and we would rather you plant once.

Start with the space, not the species
Look up. Service drops, street lights, and the neighbor’s pool cage are the real planting guide. A live oak that wants 40 feet of crown does not belong in a 15-foot side yard. A palm can. A gumbo limbo can, with some pruning. Planting a second black olive in the hole you just paid to grind is how you buy this job twice.
Davie may require a replacement if your removal permit said so. Use the Town’s list when they give you one. We do not invent an approved-species ordinance on this page. Check davie-fl.gov and the permit notes.
Trees that usually work here
Live oak: the long game. Needs room, structural pruning when young, and a owner who will not bury the flare. Mahogany: fast shade, brittle in wind if you let it get heavy; thinning matters. Gumbo limbo: peels, takes heat, friendlier near some houses than oak. Pigeon plum and stopper: smaller native options when the lot is tight. Palms (sabal, royal, where they fit): shade is different — filtered, not a oak ceiling.
We are not going to rank a “top ten” with fake scores. Those five show up on lots we work, including in Weston HOAs that have their own lists on top of the town’s.
What to skip or use carefully
Ficus as a “tree” next to a slab is a root story. Carrotwood and Australian pine are invasive problems, not shade plans. A coconut over a walkway is a nut helmet zone. If you want fruit, a mango is a different post on this blog; it is not a street tree.
Planting so it lives
Dig a wide hole, not a deep grave. Set the flare at grade, not below. Water it through the first dry season. Stake only if it cannot stand. Mulch as a donut, not a volcano. Florida Grade #1 stock if the permit required it. A $20 skinny whip in August without water is a stick.
We will plant when that is part of the job. We will also grind, haul, and leave you a clean hole if you have your own nursery. For aftercare thinking, mango tree care is fruit-specific; the watering idea is the same.
Give it a job
Shade the west wall, not the AC exhaust. Keep the septic and the drain field in mind. Leave the swale to the Town. If the HOA has a palette, get the architectural stamp before the tree is on the truck.
After the new tree is in
The first year is water and weed control, not a pruning sculpture. Take only dead or broken wood. Structural pruning starts when the tree has a year in the ground and a reason to pick a leader. Do not let a landscape crew hedge a young oak into a ball. You paid for a tree, not a lollipop.
Keep string trimmers off the bark. Keep the mulch pulled back from the flare. If the tree came with a nursery stake, take the stake off when it can stand. Leaving a strap on a growing trunk girdles it.
If the replacement was a permit condition, keep the receipt and the species tag until the Town signs off. Replacing a required oak with a coconut because it was cheaper is how you buy a second permit conversation.
Spacing: two live oaks on a 50-foot lot will fight. One oak and a palm is a calmer yard. Think about the west sun on the house, not a row of matching trunks along the property line that will be a hedge of wood in fifteen years.
If you want us to plant, we will quote the tree, the delivery, the hole, and the first watering instruction. We will not quote a five-year maintenance plan you did not ask for. You can put the new tree on the same trim cycle as the rest of the lot once it is established.
If you want us on the property, have the gate code, the HOA rule if there is one, and a clear photo of the whole tree or hedge from the side that faces the house. That is enough to start. We will tell you if we need to walk it before we price. No dollar figures on this page, no 24-hour promise we cannot keep, and no topping.
Davie is the yard we work from. Nearby cities are on the same trucks, not a different company. If the job is on the other side of the county line, say the city when you call so we bring the right permit conversation, not the Davie one.
